Today's Fact

The herald who found inhabited worlds for Galactus to eat was not born heartless — his master edited the heart out of him.

GALACTUS ERASED THE SILVER SURFER'S FEELINGS — SO HIS HERALD COULD CONDEMN WORLDS WITHOUT FLINCHING!
The Featured Fact

Norrin Radd volunteered. In the origin told in Silver Surfer Vol. 1 #1 (1968) by Stan Lee and John Buscema, the young astronomer of Zenn-La offered himself to Galactus as herald in exchange for his world — and his beloved Shalla-Bal — being spared. What he had not bargained for was the work itself: finding planet after living planet and watching each one die to feed his master.

The first inhabited world nearly broke him. Guiding Galactus to a populated planet drove Norrin close to madness, so Galactus solved the problem the way a god solves personnel issues: he reached into his herald's mind and submerged his emotions and memories, damping the conscience that made the job unbearable. The serene, detached Surfer of the early stories is not a personality — he is a setting Galactus chose.

That is why the Earth encounter lands so hard. Meeting the Fantastic Four and Alicia Masters in Fantastic Four #48–50 (1966) reawakened exactly what had been buried, and the restored Norrin turned on his master mid-meal. The nobility readers treat as the Surfer's defining trait had to be switched back on — it had been deliberately switched off for decades of service.

Why It's Obscure

Most retcons add a gadget or a relative. This one quietly rewrites every early Silver Surfer appearance you have ever read.

Nearly a century
The length of the edit — Norrin served for decades, likely close to a hundred years, with his feelings held underwater for most of that span.
Zenn-La
What he could not remember clearly — The buried memories included Shalla-Bal herself: the woman he had made the bargain for faded into the same fog as the worlds he condemned.
Alicia Masters
The accidental undo button — A blind sculptor's compassion on Earth reached the man Galactus had muted, which no army in the cosmos had managed to do.
The barrier
A second punishment for feeling again — When the restored herald betrayed him, Galactus exiled Norrin to the Earth he had saved — the feelings came back, and so did the cage.
