Today's Fact
A black hole threw Norrin Radd so far backwards that the universe had not finished switching its lights on yet.
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 6 #1 (2019), the Black Order escaped through a black hole and dragged a crowd of heroes with it. The Silver Surfer went in after them and came out billions of years in the past, in Silver Surfer: Black #1–5 (2019) by Donny Cates and Tradd Moore — an era when the abyss belonged to Knull, god of the symbiotes, who was busy putting out every light in creation.
Knull's darkness taxed the Power Cosmic for every use, and the tax showed on Norrin's body: the more he spent, the more his mirror-bright skin stained black, creeping across him fight by fight until the silver was gone entirely. The change is not a costume swap in the gallery below — the Silver Surfer: Black #5 cover shows his whole body and board gone dark, the visible end of that draining.
Cornered in issue #5, Norrin spent everything left in one act: he conjured a star at point-blank range inside Knull's grasp, blasting the god across the cosmos and dying in the effort. His scattered essence then drifted for eons, seeding life on worlds he had once watched die, before pulling itself back together in the present — reborn, forgiven by his own account, and still black from the journey until the Enigma Force restored his shine during King in Black.
Why It's Obscure
The Surfer's silver was Galactus's gift wrapping. The black is what was underneath after he gave the light away himself.
Gallery
The blackened Surfer is unmistakable on the issue #5 cover; Knull, the god who stained him, sits his throne in the third image.
