Today's Fact

He broke the universe's worst employment contract to save Earth. Forty years later, he signed it again on purpose.

THE SILVER SURFER VOLUNTEERED TO SERVE GALACTUS AGAIN — AND TOOK THE JOB HE ONCE BETRAYED!
The Featured Fact

In 2006's Annihilation event, Annihilus poured his Annihilation Wave out of the Negative Zone and began hunting anyone who carried the Power Cosmic. Former heralds were being captured or killed — Air-Walker dead, Morg and Terrax taken — and in Annihilation: Silver Surfer #1–#4 (2006) Norrin Radd rallied Firelord and Red Shift, then did the one thing nobody expected: he flew to Galactus and offered to become his herald a second time.

The bargain had a target. The Wave had smashed the Kyln, the cosmic prison, and freed two Proemial gods, Tenebrous and Aegis, ancient peers of Galactus himself. To stand any chance against them, the Surfer accepted a fresh, deeper infusion of the Power Cosmic and swore service again. Re-forged, he crushed Ravenous, the leader of Annihilus's Seekers, with an ease that showed exactly how much stronger the renewed bond had made him.

The reunion still nearly killed them both. Aegis and Tenebrous overpowered herald and master together, and Annihilus chained Galactus up as a weapon. Drax the Destroyer freed the Surfer, the Surfer freed Galactus, and the enraged Devourer answered with the omnidirectional blast later named the Galactus Event, wiping out most of the Wave. The Surfer stayed on as herald afterward — this time with his eyes open, his conscience intact, and a master whose appetite had only grown.

Why It's Obscure

Exile, defiance and a stolen board fill the famous chapters. The voluntary return is the chapter fans skip.

2006
The second signing — Annihilation: Silver Surfer (2006) has Norrin Radd agree to serve his old master again to gain the power the war demands.
The Kyln
A prison break of gods — The Wave's destruction of the Kyln freed Tenebrous and Aegis, beings from Galactus's own generation of the cosmos.
Ravenous
The demonstration — Freshly re-empowered, the Surfer defeats the Seekers' leader Ravenous almost casually — then spares his life.
Stardust
Two heralds at once — After the war the Surfer was joined in service by Stardust, the herald he had replaced, breaking Galactus's one-herald custom.
