The theft was an invitation. In Fantastic Four #57–#60 (1966), by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Doctor Doom summoned the exiled Surfer to Castle Doom, played the gracious host, and walked him past a machine fitted with cosmic inductors. The apparatus ripped the Power Cosmic out of Norrin Radd and poured it into Doom, board included — leaving the Surfer a weakened prisoner in his own guest room while Doom pronounced himself master of mankind and went joyriding through the sky.
What followed was four issues of a mortal drunk on a herald's inheritance: Doom swatted the Fantastic Four aside, ranged across the world, and sneered at Reed Richards' attempts to slow him. Richards bought time with an Anti-Cosmic Flying Wing, a drone built to leech the stolen energy and, more importantly, to be chased.
Doom took the bait and pursued the wing past the edge of the atmosphere — straight into the one piece of architecture he had forgotten. Galactus had ringed Earth with a barrier keyed to keep his faithless herald in, and as far as that barrier was concerned, the thing wearing the Power Cosmic was the herald. The collision stripped Doom bare and sent the board gliding home to the Surfer. Doom had stolen everything Galactus gave Norrin Radd, including, it turned out, the prison.
Why It's Obscure
He copied the power perfectly. He also copied the punishment, which was filed under the same account.
