Today's Fact
Checked against independent sources — the issues are cited below.
For decades the Surfer summoned his board with the cry “To me, my board!” In Dan Slott and Michael Allred's Silver Surfer Vol. 7 (2014), his traveling companion Dawn Greenwood heard that command as a name — “Toomie” — and began addressing the board as though it were a third member of the crew.
The joke hardened into canon remarkably fast. A review of Silver Surfer Vol. 7 #5 (2014) already describes Toomie as Dawn's name for the board, and the synopsis for Silver Surfer Vol. 7 #13 (2015) lists the survivors of the universe's end as “the Surfer, Dawn, and Toomie” — the board credited in print exactly like a person.
The board had always behaved as if it were nearly alive: forged from the same galactic glaze as the Surfer's silver skin, mentally linked to its rider, and able to cross the cosmos to reach his outstretched hand. Dawn simply supplied the one thing Galactus never had — a nickname warm enough to stick.
Why It's Obscure
He has crossed the universe on that board for sixty years. It took a guest-house keeper from Massachusetts to give it a first name.
