Today's Fact
The Black King's power is a battery with no charger but violence — so his morning routine is property damage, administered to his own walls.
Sebastian Shaw absorbs the kinetic energy of impacts and metabolises it into strength, speed and stamina. The catch is storage: the charge fades, and without it the Black King is merely a strong, fit, ordinary man. Marvel's official character profile records his solution in plain terms — to keep his strength at superhuman levels, Shaw punches walls upon waking, building his power reserves before he does anything else with his day.
The routine works because an impact cuts both ways: every blow he lands on an unyielding surface drives energy back into his own body, and Shaw has turned that feedback into a discipline. When a wall is not enough, he escalates — he has had his own mercenaries pummel him to stockpile enough energy to go without sleep entirely, treating rest as just another expense his power can pay for.
Charging himself is also his favourite escape plan. Locked in a kinetic-dampening cell at Avengers Academy during Avengers Academy #29–31 (2012), Shaw politely asked for reading material, then beat a heavy book against his own head, blow after blow, until he had stored enough energy to punch through the cell floor and fight his way out. The guards had disarmed the most dangerous man on campus and then handed him the weapon: anything solid, including literature.
Why It's Obscure
Other mutants wake up powerful. Shaw wakes up ordinary, and has scheduled his violence accordingly — first appointment of the day, every day.
