Today's Fact
The Black King was never crowned, promoted, or voted in — he was a Black Bishop who buried the old regime in a single night and took the chair himself.
Sebastian Shaw entered the Hellfire Club's ruling Council of the Chosen as a mere Black Bishop, recruited by White King Edward "Ned" Buckman to help fund Steven Lang's Project: Armageddon. Buckman sold it as mutant research; in secret, he and Lang meant the project's rebuilt Sentinels to exterminate mutantkind — starting, when he was done with Shaw, with the Club's own mutants. The full backstory was only told years after Shaw's debut, in the backup story in Classic X-Men #7 (1987).
The betrayal turned personal at Shaw's Long Island beach house. Tipped off by Emma Frost, who had pulled Buckman's true intentions from a comatose man's mind, Shaw was attacked by a Sentinel — and his lover, the teleporter Lourdes Chantel, was struck down saving him, dying in his arms after teleporting him free of the machine's grip. Lourdes had distrusted Buckman all along, and Shaw had ignored every warning she gave him.
That same night, Shaw and Frost struck back. Emma seized Buckman's mind and forced him to gun down his own Council of the Chosen, White Queen Paris Seville included; Shaw then took the gun from him and broke Buckman's neck with his own hands. By morning the old regime was dead, Shaw had proclaimed himself Black King, and the Council of the Chosen had been remade as his Inner Circle of Lords Cardinal — the Hellfire Club the X-Men would face in X-Men #129–130 (1980).
Why It's Obscure
Shaw debuted in 1980 already wearing the crown — the coup that put it on his head stayed untold until a 1987 backup story rewrote his first appearances.
