Today's Fact

The youngest Scott Summers ever put on the visor looked at the adult heroes, looked at the X-Men, and picked a third option entirely.

TEENAGE CYCLOPS ASKED TO JOIN THE CHAMPIONS — THE TIME-DISPLACED TEEN QUIT BROODING WITH THE X-MEN TO RUN WITH MS. MARVEL'S CREW!
The Featured Fact

When the time-displaced teenage Scott Summers watched Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales and Nova walk out on the Avengers after Civil War II and promise to fix the world without the collateral damage, something in the young leader snapped into place. Per Marvel's own Champions history, the speech Kamala Khan posted online struck a chord with the teen Cyclops — and he travelled to the new team and asked to be admitted rather than waiting to be recruited.

He arrived half-expecting a fight. The Champions were camping out and bonding when the visored stranger appeared, and a kid whose older self had become mutantkind's most wanted revolutionary had to win over teenagers who only knew the headlines. He made his case the Cyclops way — plainly, awkwardly, and without a single optic blast — and the team voted him in for Champions Vol. 2 #2 (2016).

The posting could never last: his fellow time-displaced X-Men eventually called him home, and duty dragged him back to the timeline that owned him. But for one stretch of 2016, the most buttoned-up mutant alive took orders from a sixteen-year-old from Jersey City — and by every account on the page, he was happier for it.

Why It's Obscure

Scott Summers has led the X-Men, X-Factor and a revolution. Almost nobody remembers the season he spent as somebody else's recruit.

The walkout
Three Avengers quit — Kamala Khan, Miles Morales and Sam Alexander left Earth's Mightiest over how the adults handled Civil War II, and built a team on hope instead of force.
The speech
A post that recruited a Summers — After the Champions freed trafficked girls from the clown Pagliacci, Ms. Marvel announced the team to the world online; social media named them, and one reader in a visor took notes.
The audition
He asked; they deliberated — Teen Scott showed up at the team's campout uninvited, survived the suspicion his future reputation carried, and earned a roster spot in Champions #2.
The recall
Two teams, one Scott — The original five's mission in the present eventually reclaimed him, closing the only chapter where Cyclops answered to a roll call he did not write.
