Today's Fact

The first X-Man started out as another mutant's unwilling weapon, and his rescue took a telepath working alongside an FBI agent.

BEFORE HE LED THE X-MEN, TEENAGE CYCLOPS WAS A CRIMINAL'S PRISONER — JACK O'DIAMONDS FORCED HIM TO COMMIT CRIMES WITH HIS OPTIC BLASTS!
The Featured Fact

Long before the visor and the field-leader's reputation, teenage Scott Summers walked out of an Omaha orphanage and straight into the custody of a mutant criminal named Jack Winters, who called himself Jack O'Diamonds. Winters recognised what the boy's erupting optic blasts could do for a robbery crew, and when Scott balked at stealing for him, the older mutant answered with beatings. The coercion is laid out in the backup origin stories Marvel ran through X-Men Vol. 1 #38–42 (1967–1968).

The Winters months also handed Scott the one piece of equipment he has never been without. Pounding headaches and searing eyestrain sent the boy to a specialist, who discovered that lenses ground from ruby quartz eased the pain — the same mineral that still tames his gaze today. His power's first public eruption demolished a falling construction crane high above a crowd, and the people he had just saved repaid him by forming a mob and chasing him out of town.

That mob scene is what put Professor Charles Xavier on the trail. Working with FBI agent Fred Duncan, Xavier tracked the runaway pair, dueled Winters mind to mind while the diamond-hard crook tried to finish transforming his own body, and freed the boy from his keeper for good. Scott's reward for surviving his first supervillain was an enrolment: pupil number one at a brand-new school, and the founding name on the X-Men's roster.

Why It's Obscure

The X-Men's leader was recruited out of a crime spree he never chose, by a professor who had to win a telepathic fistfight to sign him.

Omaha
An orphanage with a secret landlord — Scott's childhood home was quietly controlled by Mister Sinister, though the Jack Winters chapter began only after the boy left its walls.
Ruby quartz
The headache cure that became an icon — A specialist prescribed ruby-quartz lenses for a teenager's migraines, years before anyone built him a combat visor around the same stone.
Jack Winters
A keeper made of diamond ambition — Winters wanted a cyclotron that would turn his flesh to living diamond, and he planned to spend a frightened boy's optic blasts as his entry fee.
Fred Duncan
The FBI man in the rescue party — Xavier's partner in the hunt was a federal agent who ran the Bureau's mutant desk, an alliance Marvel left buried in Silver Age back pages.
