Today's Fact
Verified against three independent sources. Issues cited below.
Scott Summers grew up believing he had exactly one brother. Alex — Havok — was the sibling he knew. In truth there was a third: Gabriel Summers, still unborn when the Shi'ar killed his mother Katherine. The Shi'ar cut the baby from her body, aged him in an incubation chamber into a slave, and lost him on Earth, where Moira MacTaggert took the amnesiac boy in as one of her Muir Island students.
When the living island Krakoa captured the original X-Men, Professor X threw Moira's untrained students — Gabriel, who had just learned he was Cyclops's brother, alongside Petra, Sway and Darwin — into a rescue mission before he ever assembled the famous Giant-Size team. They freed Cyclops, and then Krakoa apparently killed them all. In reality Gabriel survived for decades in suspended agony, kept alive only because Darwin merged his own energy form into Gabriel's body.
Scott came home hysterical with guilt, so Xavier made an executive decision: he edited Scott's mind and deleted Gabriel — the brother, the team, the deaths — entirely. The truth only surfaced twenty years later in X-Men: Deadly Genesis #1–6 (2005–2006), when the energy released by M-Day woke Gabriel, now calling himself Vulcan, and he came back for revenge on the professor who had buried him twice.
Why It's Obscure
Two Summers brothers is the version in every handbook. The third was hidden inside a mind-wipe, a lost rescue mission, and a thirty-year-old cover story.
