Cyclops does not make his optic blasts. According to the 1983 Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, his eyes are interdimensional apertures — portals to a non-Einsteinian universe filled with particles that slam into our reality as pure concussive force. Fans named that place what Marvel never quite did: the Punch Dimension.
The handbook version explains the weird details elegantly: Scott's psionic field shunts the particles harmlessly around his own body, so even his eyelids can hold back a universe, and ruby quartz works because it resonates with that field. He absorbs ambient energy — sunlight included — not as fuel for the blasts, but to open and hold the portals.
Then Marvel got cold feet. The 1986 Handbook walked it back to plain energy absorption; the 2004 Handbook tried to have both at once. The Punch Dimension was never shown in an X-Men comic — until Ultimates 2 #9 (2017), where America Chavez opened a portal to a dimension of red kinetic energy that looked exactly like Scott's blasts. The dimension is canon. Whether Scott's eyes open onto it remains Marvel's longest-running maybe.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody knows the visor holds his blasts back. Almost nobody knows a Marvel handbook claimed his eyes are holes into another universe — and Marvel spent 20 years arguing with itself about it.
