Today's Fact
A 12th-century crusader said no to En Sabah Nur exactly once, and he paid for that single refusal with roughly eight centuries inside a sealed Alpine tomb.
APOCALYPSE MADE EXODUS IN THE CRUSADES — THEN BURIED HIM ALIVE FOR REFUSING ONE ORDER!
The Featured Fact

Bennet du Paris, a French crusader who did not yet know he was a mutant, trekked into the desert hunting the legendary Tower of Power near Aqaba — and found Apocalypse waiting instead. En Sabah Nur awakened the knight’s latent psionic gifts, amplified them enormously, renamed him Exodus, and installed him as his champion.

The loyalty test arrived immediately. Apocalypse ordered his new weapon to kill the Black Knight — du Paris’s closest friend Eobar Garrington, whose body was then hosting the time-displaced Dane Whitman, with the Eternal Sersi at his side. Exodus refused, denounced his maker as a false god, and turned his borrowed power against Apocalypse himself.

The rebellion lasted moments and the sentence lasted centuries. Apocalypse stripped the stolen power back out of him and sealed the comatose crusader inside a crypt in the Swiss Alps, under a curse that let other people wander in but never let Exodus walk out. He remained there until Magneto freed him in the 20th century and recruited him into the Acolytes.

Why It's Obscure
The strongest herald Apocalypse ever built was the one who would not carry out his very first order.
12TH CENTURY

THE RECRUIT

Du Paris went looking for a mythic tower and came home a weapon: a sleeping mutant switched on and supercharged by the oldest mutant of all.
AQABA

THE TEST

New recruits get orientation. Exodus got a single command — murder his best friend — as both audition and loyalty oath.
SWISS ALPS

THE SENTENCE

A tomb with a one-way curse: visitors could come and go for generation after generation of appointed guards, but the prisoner stayed in his coma.
20TH CENTURY

THE RELEASE

Magneto finally opened the crypt and aimed Exodus at his enemies — inheriting a zealot whose devotion had already survived one god’s rejection.
