Today's Fact

When Apocalypse resurfaced during the Blood of Apocalypse storyline in X-Men Vol. 2 #182 (2006), his first Horseman was not recruited at full strength but collected from a hospital-grade low point: Shiro Yoshida, Sunfire, had lost his legs and with them his place in the fight, which made him exactly the kind of wounded pride Apocalypse liked to purchase.
The Celestial refit restored what Sunfire had lost in the most theatrical currency available — limbs of living flame to replace the ones he had surrendered, alongside a Horseman’s new designation as Famine. The restoration was real, and so was the invoice: the legs walked only in Apocalypse’s service, as part of a campaign to cull a post-Decimation world.
Sunfire’s story exposes the transaction underneath every Horseman upgrade Apocalypse offers. He rarely tempts the contented; he shops among the maimed, the grieving and the discarded, pays in the exact coin each of them is desperate for, and lets gratitude do the work that chains would do less elegantly.
Why It's Obscure
Apocalypse’s recruitment pitch works because the first instalment is always a miracle.
