GAMBIT VOLUNTEERED TO BECOME APOCALYPSE’S HORSEMAN OF DEATH — AND THE MAKEOVER ATE HIS MIND!
The Featured Fact

When Apocalypse resurfaced after the Decimation had cut mutantkind to a remnant, he arrived preaching survival and recruiting Horsemen from the desperate and the damaged. Into that recruitment drive stepped the last volunteer anyone expected: Gambit, who offered himself for the vacancy of Death during “Blood of Apocalypse,” X-Men Vol. 2 #182–187 (2006).

Remy LeBeau’s plan sounded workable in the mirror. He would accept the transformation, spy from inside the Horsemen’s ranks, and shield the X-Men from whatever the old tyrant was building — and to protect that cover he even asked to stay awake through the procedure, hoping an unsedated mind would stay his own. What came out the other side of the Celestial machinery had his memories, his accent, and a loyalty transplant he never agreed to.

The conversion rewrote the body along with the allegiance: skin gone jet black, hair bleached bone white, his familiar coat traded for a Horseman’s black, and his kinetic gift corrupted into a death charge that broke down living matter on contact while he learned to turn clean air itself poisonous. The new Death very nearly finished Rogue before teammates intervened — the clearest proof that the infiltrator, not the tyrant, was the one who had been infiltrated.

Why It's Obscure

Of all the doors a double agent can walk through, the one labelled ‘voluntary brainwashing’ has the worst reviews.

The volunteer
No kidnapping required — unlike most Horsemen, Gambit knocked on the Sphinx’s door himself, which makes the outcome less a tragedy of force than of spectacular overconfidence.
The makeover
Celestial tailoring — blackened skin, white hair and a black coat were the visible receipt for the transformation, a uniform his body kept trying to re-wear long after he broke away.
Death charge
A darker deck — where his cards once exploded, they now disintegrated living tissue and could be steered mid-flight, and the air in a room became a weapon he carried everywhere.
The residue
Hard to uninstall — even after later attempts to purge Apocalypse’s influence, the Death persona resurfaced more than once, suggesting the Horseman was archived in Gambit rather than deleted.

Bullpen Bulletins

  1. X-Men: How Apocalypse Turned Gambit Into His Horseman — CBRAfter his transformation into Death, Gambit’s skin darkens, his hair turns white and his costume becomes a black version of his normal look; his charge becomes a ‘Death Charge’ that breaks down living matter, and he gains the ability to create toxic gases.
  2. X-Men ’97’s Surprise Ending Sets Up a Classic Storyline — SlashFilmGambit became Death in the 2006 arc ‘Blood of Apocalypse’ in X-Men Vol. 2 #182–187; he electively joined intending to be a double agent, but the brainwashing proved too great — as Death his skin becomes dark blue, his hair ghostly white, and he trades his brown coat for a black one.
  3. Gambit — uncannyxmen.netAs Death, Gambit was bio-engineered by Apocalypse with a secondary form possessing jet black skin, a transmogrifying power that converts air into a toxic vapor, and the ability to charge objects with a carbonizing force that reduces targets to ash.
