APOCALYPSE SURVIVED HIS OWN DEFEAT BY MOVING INTO CYCLOPS’ BODY!
The Featured Fact

At the climax of The Twelve, Apocalypse had the Living Monolith wired into a Celestial machine to drain twelve powerful mutants at once. The power was only half the prize: his own ancient body was wearing out, so he meant to pour his essence into the young, immensely powerful Nate Grey and wear him as a fresh host, in X-Men Vol. 2 #97 (2000).

The transfer beam never reached Nate. A depowered Cyclops hurled himself into its path and took the circuit’s place, and the two men fused into a single composite being the horrified X-Men could only watch form. Professor Xavier reached out telepathically for his first student and reported the chilling result: he could sense Scott Summers’ mind and soul nowhere inside the thing wearing pieces of both men.

The merged being vanished and Scott was mourned as dead, but months later Jean Grey and Cable tracked an amnesiac Cyclops to Akkaba, Egypt — Apocalypse’s birthplace — where the old tyrant was quietly rewriting his host from within. In X-Men: The Search for Cyclops #4 (2001), Jean used her psychic rapport to tear Apocalypse’s essence bodily out of her husband, and Cable speared the exposed spirit with his Psimitar, scattering it to nothing.

Why It's Obscure

Getting beaten is a temporary problem when you can simply change address — and the new landlord never signed a lease.

The host
Chosen for the mileage — Nate Grey, the time-tossed mutant teenager, had the raw telepathic and telekinetic power Apocalypse wanted and a body thousands of years younger than the decaying one he was leaving.
The dive
A father’s reflex — Scott Summers shares Nate’s genes and none of his hesitation; shoving his son out of the circuit was instinct first and strategy never.
The tenant
Renovations from inside — hidden in Scott’s body, Apocalypse worked slowly, nudging his host’s memories and temperament while Jean’s grief kept insisting Scott was still in there somewhere.
The eviction
Rapport as a crowbar — Jean’s psychic bond with Scott let her grip the intruder’s mind directly, and Cable’s Psimitar finished what her grip exposed.
