APOCALYPSE BEAT YOUNG THOR SO BADLY, THOR INVENTED A CELESTIAL-KILLING AXE!
The Featured Fact

Before Mjolnir, before the Avengers, a young Thor was drinking and brawling in a Scandinavian tavern in 1013 AD when a stranger attacked him: Apocalypse, wearing Celestial armor no godly blow could dent. En Sabah Nur announced he was acting to “safeguard the future” — then beat the thunder god and left him humiliated.

The grudge produced a weapon. In Uncanny Avengers Vol. 1 #6 (2013), Thor demands help in Asgard; Odin explains the Celestials had wrung a non-aggression treaty from Earth’s gods, so no help is coming. A figure Thor takes for Loki instead shows him a hidden scroll: a weapon could be blessed with Odin’s bloodline to pierce Celestial armor. Thor casts the blessing himself, with his own blood, on his axe — Jarnbjorn.

The axe outlived the feud by a thousand years. Thor slew Apocalypse’s 11th-century Horsemen in London, and in the modern era the same blood-blessed Jarnbjorn became the Avengers’ Celestial-killer — most famously opening the throat of the Celestial Exitar in Uncanny Avengers #21. None of it exists because of a god’s plan. It exists because Apocalypse embarrassed a young Thor in a bar.

Why It's Obscure

Thor has a Celestial-piercing axe for one reason: in 1013 AD Apocalypse, working from Kang’s future hit-list, picked a fight the young god couldn’t win — and Thor never forgot it.

1013 AD
The bar fight — Apocalypse attacks young Thor in Scandinavia, hunting the ancestors of future enemies on intelligence supplied by Rama-Tut — Kang the Conqueror’s pharaoh self.
The armor
Odin confirms Apocalypse answers to the Celestials and wears their armor — and that a treaty bars the gods of Earth from striking back. Diplomacy, Asgard-style: you’re on your own, son.
Jarnbjorn
Thor blesses his axe with his own blood under a scroll ritual meant for Odin’s bloodline, giving Jarnbjorn the power to pierce Celestial armor.
1000 yrs on
The grudge pays off in Uncanny Avengers #21: Thor drives Jarnbjorn into the Celestial Exitar — a weapon forged against Apocalypse, used on Apocalypse’s masters.

  1. Uncanny Avengers Vol. 1 #6 — Marvel Database (Fandom)Full synopsis: in 1013 AD Apocalypse attacks Thor, his armor withstands godly might; Odin explains the Celestial treaty; the scroll blessing lets a weapon pierce Celestial armor; Thor then slays Apocalypse’s Horsemen in London.
  2. Thor Forgot About His Celestial-Killing Weapon — ScreenRantAfter crossing paths with Apocalypse, a mutant protected by Celestial-forged armor, Thor used his own blood to bless Jarnbjorn so it could pierce that metal; centuries later he used it to kill the Celestial Exitar in Uncanny Avengers #21.
  3. Is Thor Wielding Jarnbjorn? — ComicBook.comThor once used Jarnbjorn to battle Apocalypse when both were relatively young; Apocalypse’s Celestial armor proved difficult to penetrate, so Thor blessed Jarnbjorn with his own blood to slice through even Celestial armor.
