Today's Fact
Knocked dead out of a Savage Land sky, Warren Worthington woke up dressed by the last man on Earth he would have chosen.
In X-Men Vol. 1 #62 (1969), Angel chased the energy-vampire Sauron into the Savage Land, was savaged by a flock of pterodons and fell from the sky stone dead. He was found by Amphibius, servant of a silver-haired scientist calling himself the Creator, whose advanced medicine dragged Warren back to life — and who sent the grateful Angel back out wearing a sleek new blue-and-white costume of the Creator's own design.
The Creator was Magneto. X-Men #62 is the first time in comics history that the Master of Magnetism appeared without his helmet — the disguise was so complete that neither the X-Men nor the readers recognised the kindly benefactor as the team's archenemy. Warren flew off in his worst enemy's tailoring, thanked him for it, and never suspected a thing.
Months later, in X-Men Vol. 1 #65 (1970), the bill came due. The costume had been quietly siphoning off Warren's mutagenic energy the entire time he wore it. Magneto reclaimed the suit, pulled its hood up, strapped on a pair of fake wings and — powered by the stolen energy and passing for Angel — struck at the X-Men. And the final twist: Warren liked the look so much that after his grim years as Archangel, he retired the Death uniform and went back to Magneto's blue-and-white design by choice, wearing his enemy's gift as his signature costume for years.
Why It's Obscure
A dead Angel, a bareheaded villain, and a costume with a meter running.
