Today's Fact

A hero fresh from being told nothing could kill him signed up for a brand-new team — and did not survive its debut outing.

WONDER MAN LEARNED HE WAS IMMORTAL — THEN DIED AGAIN ON HIS NEW TEAM'S VERY FIRST MISSION, SCATTERED ACROSS THE CALIFORNIA SKY!
The Featured Fact

Simon Williams had only just come to terms with what he was. A descent into the underworld in his solo series ended with the revelation that his ionic makeup had carried him past ordinary death altogether, and when the West Coast Avengers folded, Iron Man made him the first eager recruit for a proactive replacement team called Force Works. Simon arrived at the new venture talking openly about having all the time in the world.

Hours later, in Force Works Vol. 1 #1 (1994), Simon and the Vision were emptying out the old Avengers Compound when a renegade Kree unit called Starstealth struck from orbit. Their ionic cannon was not a general bombardment: the beam was encoded to bio-spores taken from Simon and the Vision, so it tore at his energy matrix specifically, overloading his body toward a meltdown that threatened to chain-react through the planet itself.

Simon broke into the Kree ship to silence the weapon, but a simultaneous invasion by the alien Scatter damaged the vessel and pushed the cannon past control. Rather than let ionic fallout rain down on Earth, he hauled the malfunctioning cannon deeper into space, where it detonated. The blast dispersed his ionic mass through the upper atmosphere — and for days afterward, the skies over California carried a red tint from what was left of him.

Why It's Obscure

Launch issues are supposed to sell a team's future; this one spent its final pages writing off the recruit who had most loudly volunteered.

The setup
Immortality, freshly certified — Simon's solo title had only recently walked him through Hades and handed him confirmation that death no longer applied to him in the usual way, which makes the timing of the cannon blast a deliberate editorial gut-punch.
The weapon
A key that fit two locks — Because the Kree beam was tuned to bio-spores harvested from Simon and the Vision, teammates standing in the same bombardment, Black Widow among them, were untouched while both ionic-linked men collapsed.
The red sky
An aftermath you could see — Tales of the Marvels: The Wonder Years recorded that California's skies stayed tinted red for days, a whole state's weather serving as the visible residue of one scattered Avenger.
The pattern
First issues keep burying him — Force Works' debut repeated a rhythm from Simon's career: a new beginning, a heroic sacrifice, and an apparent death before the new arrangement had time to settle in.
