Today's Fact
Logan has buried wives, lovers, and entire lives. The cruelest entry in the ledger is a son he mourned as unborn for sixty years while the boy was being sharpened into a weapon aimed at him.
In 1946, Logan was living the quietest life he has ever managed, in Jasmine Falls, Japan, with his pregnant wife Itsu. The manipulator Romulus sent the brainwashed Winter Soldier to end it; Logan came home to Itsu’s body and grieved for two. What he never knew was that Romulus then cut the unborn child from her womb — and the infant, carrying his father’s healing factor, survived the extraction.
The baby was left with a wealthy couple, Akihira and Natsumi, near Sendai and named Akihiro. The household servants taunted the mixed-heritage boy with a slur — ‘daken,’ mongrel — and he eventually stole the insult and wore it as his name. Romulus collected him in adolescence and finished the job, training Daken as an assassin and feeding him a single fact-shaped lie: that his father had abandoned him and let his mother die.
Daken debuted as an adult in Wolverine: Origins #10 (2007) by trying to gut the father he had been raised to blame. He fights with Logan’s own toolkit plus twists of his own — two knuckle claws and a third wrist claw on each hand, plus pheromones that bend the emotions of everyone around him. The claws and the tribal tattoos that cover his torso are both on full display in today’s gallery portrait of him.
Why It's Obscure
Every Wolverine fan knows Logan lost his memories. Far fewer know Weapon X was not the first programme to steal his family — Romulus had been pruning the Logan bloodline for centuries.
