Today's Fact
One Christmas-season snowstorm, one hunted mutant who could barely speak, and one small Power Pack member who refused to leave him in the drifts.
In Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #205 (1986), “Wounded Wolf,” by Chris Claremont and Barry Windsor-Smith, Lady Deathstrike pays Spiral’s Body Shop to rebuild her and three former Hellfire guards — Cole, Macon and Reese — as cyborgs, then hunts Logan through New York in a blizzard. Their first assault leaves him bloodied, drugged and slipping toward an animal state in the snow.
Separated from her babysitter in the panic, young Katie Power — Energizer of Power Pack — finds him instead. Logan cannot explain himself and at first can only growl and, later, speak in Japanese, so Katie does the field work herself: she hauls him upright, flags down a taxi, gives him her winter jacket when she realises he is freezing, and keeps moving him from cover to cover while the cyborgs close in.
Those stolen minutes are the whole battle. Given time, Logan’s healing factor clears the drugs and knits his mind back together, and he sends Katie to hide with her eyes covered before turning on his hunters. He defeats Deathstrike, is shaken by how completely she has rebuilt herself in metal, and refuses her plea for a mercy killing — then walks his small rescuer home through the snow.
Why It's Obscure
Logan’s legend is built on surviving anything alone, which makes an issue where survival is outsourced to a child in a yellow snowsuit easy to overlook and hard to forget.
