Today's Fact

The ceremony had a phased-through-the-door witness, a guest list of women the bride had just poisoned, and a groom who treated the whole thing as a sentence to serve.

WOLVERINE MARRIED VIPER, A HYDRA TERRORIST — BECAUSE A DYING FRIEND'S DEBT LEFT HIM NO HONOURABLE WAY TO SAY NO!
The Featured Fact

The debt was decades old. Long before the wedding, Viper had fought beside Logan and his lover Seraph against Sabretooth; Seraph died in the fighting, and on her tomb Logan swore a vow — Viper could one day ask him for anything, and he would grant it. In Wolverine Vol. 2 #125 (1998) she finally came to Madripoor to collect, after first poisoning and brainwashing the women closest to Logan, from Phoenix and Psylocke to Rogue, Jubilee and Yukio, and sending them out to hunt him down as her way of getting his attention.

Her price, revealed in Wolverine Vol. 2 #126 (1998), was marriage. Prince Baran of Madripoor was dead, the island's crimelords were circling the throne, and a wedding to Patch — the name every bar in Lowtown knew Logan by — would cement Viper's claim to rule the place. Logan's friends were appalled and Jean Grey told him to go to hell, but a vow was a vow. Kitty Pryde, the one friend who stayed, served as the witness who made the ceremony legal, phasing through the door Viper blocked on her way out.

Married life went about as well as the engagement had. Logan helped his wife beat back the Hand, HYDRA and Sabretooth to secure her throne in issues #127–128, after which she promptly issued warrants for him. She later tried to slip him poison during Madripoor's Bloodsport tournament, and the marriage only ended when Viper needed Ogun driven off her island badly enough to trade Logan the one thing he wanted from her: a divorce.

Why It's Obscure

Logan has survived adamantium, Magneto and the Phoenix Force. Matrimony required a hostage exchange to escape.

The vow
A blank cheque, signed in grief — Seraph died saving him, Viper got him home, and Logan's promise had no expiry date and no exclusions clause.
The collection
Bridesmaids, weaponised — Before naming her price, Viper poisoned Logan's closest friends and aimed them at him, just to prove she could reach him whenever she chose.
Madripoor
A crown, not a romance — The marriage was a land grab in a wedding dress: Patch's name gave Viper's claim on the vacant throne its local legitimacy.
The divorce
Freedom, at ninja prices — Viper only released him when she needed Ogun gone more than she needed a husband, and charged him one exorcism for the paperwork.
