The first snikt in Wolverine’s life belonged to a frail rich kid, not a soldier. In Origin #2 (2001), by Paul Jenkins, Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove, young James Howlett watches groundskeeper Thomas Logan gun down John Howlett — and grief tears three bone claws out of each of the boy’s hands for the very first time.
James kills Thomas on the spot and slashes his son Dog across the face. The series strongly implies the darkest twist of all: Thomas, who had an affair with James’s mother Elizabeth, may have been the boy’s biological father — meaning Wolverine’s first kill was likely his own parent.
His mother recoils, calls him a monster, and takes her own life soon after. James flees with Rose O’Hara, his healing factor walls the night off behind a mental block, and the name he eventually takes on the run is the surname of the man he killed: Logan.
Why It's Obscure
For roughly a century of publication, Wolverine had no origin at all — and when it finally arrived, page one of his legend was a child’s trauma.
