For decades, Wolverine’s returns from fatal wounds involved a second, invisible fight. Wolverine Vol. 3 #48 (2006), by Marc Guggenheim, reveals what happens while Logan’s body heals: his soul lands in a fiery purgatory opposite a swordsman named Lazaer, and only a victory there sends him back to the living.
The arrangement began in the trenches of the First World War, detailed in Wolverine Vol. 3 #57–58 (2007): Logan, the last man standing, fought and killed a stranger who proved to be Azrael, the Angel of Death. Death took the loss personally, and the grudge became a standing duel — each time Wolverine was effectively killed, the two fought again, with permanent death as the price of a single defeat.
The streak nearly ended when grief over his partner Amir’s death drained Logan’s will to live and left his healed body brain-dead, until Doctor Strange traced his stranded soul. In Wolverine Vol. 3 #61 (2008) Logan finally renegotiated: he recovered a stolen fragment of his soul, did Lazaer a lethal favor — and accepted that his next true death would be final.
Why It's Obscure
A healing factor with a hidden boss fight attached: the body knits itself together while the soul argues its case at swordpoint.
