Apocalypse kidnapped Wolverine and turned him into the Horseman of Death!
The Featured Fact

In Wolverine (vol. 2) #145 (1999), Apocalypse had Logan abducted by Skrulls from the X-Men's ship in space — and replaced him with a Skrull imposter so nobody would notice he was gone. Brainwashed and offered "the fulfillment of your lifelong destiny," Logan was forced into a death-duel against Sabretooth: the winner becomes Death. Wolverine won — and Apocalypse stripped the adamantium from Sabretooth's body and re-bonded it to Wolverine's skeleton, ending six years of bone claws.

As Death, Logan wore an elaborate face-covering costume, carried a sword, and got one mission: slay the Hulk — a rematch exactly 25 years after his debut in Hulk #180–181 (1974), timed to his own 25th anniversary. The fight was a brutal draw: the Hulk pounded Logan's body to jelly, and Logan nearly slit the big guy's throat.

The X-Men only realized the truth when Death slew his Skrull imposter. With help from Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, Jubilee and Angel, Logan fought through Apocalypse's programming and broke free — but he kept the re-bonded adamantium. And the duel? It was partly Logan's own gambit: he believed he could resist the brainwashing, while Sabretooth would have become an unstoppable programmed killer.

Why It's Obscure

The most famous X-Man spent a stint as a brainwashed Horseman — and the only reason he got his adamantium back was someone else's villainy.

1993
X-Men #25 — "Fatal Attractions": Magneto rips the adamantium from Logan's skeleton. Six years of bone claws begin — and Apocalypse starts shopping for a new way to put metal back in him.
1996
Wolverine #100 — The dry run: Genesis (Cable's son Tyler) tries to re-bond Cyber's adamantium to Wolverine and brainwash him as Death. Logan's healing factor rejects the graft; the plan fails. Apocalypse was watching.
1999
Wolverine #145 — The abduction, the Skrull imposter, the Sabretooth duel. This time the re-bonding takes: Apocalypse steals Sabretooth's adamantium and gives Wolverine his claws back — with strings attached.
Trivia
Logan's reasoning in the duel: if Sabretooth won, Death would be an uncontrollable killer. If Logan won, he bet he could break the programming. He was right — barely.
