Today's Fact

Steve Rogers got the reunion everyone expected. The one that actually mattered happened in a care facility in Captain America and Bucky #624, with a woman who had been waiting since 1945 without knowing it.

BUCKY FOUND HIS LITTLE SISTER AFTER SIXTY-SIX YEARS — AND CONFESSED SINS SHE COULD NO LONGER REMEMBER!
The Featured Fact

Bucky Barnes had a younger sister, Rebecca Barnes, and the war split them long before the ice took him. Their mother died young and their father James was killed in a training accident at Camp Lehigh; family friend Major Samson looked after both children, Rebecca was sent away to boarding school, and Bucky stayed on base as its mascot — the last arrangement either sibling ever chose.

Rebecca lived a whole life believing her brother had died in 1945: marriage, a family, old age. Captain America met her first, at a veterans’ Christmas programme in the 1991 Marvel Holiday Special, and years later Steve brought the elderly Rebecca to the dedication of Bucky’s memorial statue — a funeral for a man who was, unknown to everyone there, alive and killing for the Soviets.

The real reunion came in Captain America and Bucky #624 (2011). Bucky visited Rebecca in the facility where she lived with Alzheimer’s disease and finally told his little sister everything — the fall, the arm, the Winter Soldier’s murders, all of it. He confessed to the one person on Earth who had known him before all of that, knowing the disease would carry the confession away: absolution and erasure in the same visit.

Why It's Obscure

Bucky spent decades as a man whose memories were stolen on schedule. His sister’s illness meant the family’s last living witness would lose hers the natural way — and he went anyway.

Shelbyville, Indiana

1991
Steve met her first — Captain America encountered the elderly Rebecca Proctor at a Christmas event for veterans, decades before Bucky could.
The statue
A mourner at her own brother’s memorial — Steve later escorted Rebecca to the dedication honouring Bucky, in Captain America Vol. 3 #48.
#624
The confession — Bucky unburdened himself about the Winter Soldier years to a sister whose Alzheimer’s guaranteed she could not hold onto a word of it.
