Today's Fact
Everyone stares at the gleaming Soviet steel — almost nobody asks what else the arm is quietly doing while it catches the light.
The gleaming left arm the Soviets grafted onto Bucky Barnes when they rebuilt him as the Winter Soldier — first shown in Captain America Vol. 5 #1 (2005) — is far more than a super-strong prosthetic. Its sensory array can project a hologram that makes the metal limb appear, and even feel, like an ordinary human arm, letting the world's most recognisable assassin stroll through checkpoints that should have lit up around him.
The disguise runs deeper than looks. The arm's sensors can shield itself — and other metal he is carrying, such as firearms and knives — from security screening, so metal detectors pass over a walking arsenal in silence. The same sensor suite feeds his balance and aim, mapping his surroundings and picking out targets that camouflage would hide from ordinary eyes.
When stealth stops being the plan, the arm turns artillery. Bucky can discharge crackling bolts of electrical energy from its palm, loose an electromagnetic pulse that kills nearby electronics outright, and — after an upgrade from the Fixer — vent a burst of flame. The limb that was built to mark him as a weapon can, on his word, become invisible, silent, or very loud indeed.
Why It's Obscure
The movies kept the shine and dropped the toolkit — the comics arm is a spy kit, a shield and a stun gun sharing one sleeve.
