Today's Fact

A wartime posting almost nobody lists on his record — sourced from the issue and two reference profiles below.

BUCKY'S FIRST COMMAND WAS A TEAM OF TEENAGERS — THE KID COMMANDOS, WHO GUARDED THE HOME FRONT WHILE THE INVADERS FOUGHT OVERSEAS!
The Featured Fact

Long before the metal arm, the cryo-freezers and the codename that still makes intelligence agencies nervous, James Buchanan Barnes held a command of his own. In 1942, Bucky temporarily left the Invaders to organise a squad of teenage heroes who would watch America's home front while the adult team fought in Europe: the Kid Commandos. His recruits were his fellow sidekick Toro, the flaming partner of the original Human Torch, plus two brand-new heroes created by accident in the middle of a battle.

The accident happened during a stateside fight with the spy gestalt called Agent Axis, when an invention belonging to scientist Dr. Sam Sabuki discharged into his daughter Gwenny Lou and her friend Davy Mitchell. Gwenny Lou emerged able to generate blinding light and took the name Golden Girl; Davy gained the power to spin at tremendous speed and became the Human Top. The four teenagers beat Agent Axis together, then voted to stay together — and the senior Invaders formally blessed the split, sending the youngsters off as an allied unit in their own right.

The team's debut was formalised in Invaders Vol. 1 #28 (May 1978), written by Roy Thomas with art by Frank Robbins — a Bronze Age story deliberately written back into Golden Age history. From their mobile base, the Kid Commandos spent the war years hunting Nazi espionage inside the United States, work the globe-trotting Invaders could never spare the time for. It remains the first team Bucky Barnes ever led, decades before the Winter Soldier inherited spy networks, Thunderbolts rosters and a sentient Cosmic Cube.

Why It's Obscure

The Invaders had Captain America giving the orders — the home front got a sixteen-year-old with a domino mask and total confidence.

1942
The split — Bucky and Toro detached from the Invaders mid-war, trading the European theatre for sabotage, spies and fifth columnists back home.
Agent Axis
An accident with benefits — Dr. Sabuki's runaway device handed Golden Girl her light powers and the Human Top his spin in the same discharge, doubling the roster in one panel.
The Tsunami Bomb
Kids versus grown-ups — The Commandos once opposed their own mentors, refusing to back a military strike whose blast would have drowned innocent civilians along with the enemy.
After the war
A quiet retirement — Golden Girl and the Human Top later served with the V-Battalion, while the team itself slipped into flashbacks and handbook entries for decades.
