For decades, Nick Fury held a post that appeared on no organisational chart: the Man on the Wall. Long before S.H.I.E.L.D. business hours, Fury was quietly travelling off-world and personally killing alien, supernatural and monstrous threats before they ever learned Earth's address. By the events of Original Sin (2014), the Infinity Formula had failed him, his body had aged into frailty, and the old spymaster had staged much of the crisis around the Watcher's murder as an audition for his own replacement.
The candidate who passed was Bucky Barnes. Bucky had seemingly shot and beheaded Fury during the investigation — the head belonged to a Life Model Decoy — and that cold, solitary detective work was precisely the résumé the job required. After Fury's apparent death, Daisy Johnson, also called Quake, approached Bucky with the inheritance, and he accepted a workload consisting of everything too strange and too secret for the Avengers.
The new beat began in Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #1 (2014), by Ales Kot, with Bucky and Daisy working as partners out in deep space. Their strangest early case followed an intergalactic drug called Illum to the planet Mer-Z-Bow, where Bucky ended up fighting beside an elderly version of himself from another reality to keep that world's troubles from ever pointing at Earth.
