The Featured Fact

Bucky Barnes has died in public more than once, and his second famous funeral was a deliberate production. Fighting as Captain America during Fear Itself, he faced Sin wielding the hammer of Skadi and took a wound so severe that medics in Washington found only the faintest pulse still moving in him.

The rescue plan, revealed in Fear Itself #7.1 (2011), belonged to Nick Fury and the Black Widow: a Life Model Decoy was altered to copy Bucky’s injuries so the Avengers would believe him dead, while the real man was rushed to a secret base and given the very last dose of the Infinity Formula — the compound that had kept Fury himself young and alive for decades. Fury had not needed it in ten years, and he surrendered it anyway.

The deception served three masters at once: it kept Bucky out of a Russian gulag, it freed him from the public trial of his Winter Soldier past, and it pushed a reluctant Steve Rogers back into the Captain America uniform for the war against the Serpent. When Bucky finally woke, only Rogers, Fury and the Widow knew the truth, and he chose to stay officially dead — returning to the shadows to hunt the sleeper agents he had once trained.

Why It's Obscure

A fake corpse, a borrowed heartbeat, and the last vial of another man's youth: Bucky's resurrection ran on paperwork and sacrifice.

THE DECOY

A body double for a funeral. The LMD wearing Bucky’s wounds let surgeons fight for the real patient in total secrecy, because a resurrection nobody witnesses cannot be interrupted. S.H.I.E.L.D. fakes many things; this time grief was the cover story.

THE LAST DOSE

Fury’s retirement fund, spent. The Infinity Formula was the reason a World War II veteran still ran a spy agency in the modern age, and its final vial went into somebody else’s heart. Spymasters are not famous for gifts with no ledger.

THE CHOICE

Dead on purpose. Offered a clean return to public heroism, Bucky picked the shadows instead, judging his unfinished Winter Soldier business more important than his reputation. Very few men attend their own wake and call it freedom.
