BUCKY'S OWN SEVERED ARM BROKE HIM OUT OF S.H.I.E.L.D. CUSTODY!
The Featured Fact

The most dangerous thing about the Winter Soldier's bionic arm is that it does not need the Winter Soldier attached to it. After Steve Rogers' assassination, Bucky Barnes was captured by the Black Widow and the Falcon and locked in a cell aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, while technicians carried his detached left arm off to a laboratory for study.

In Captain America Vol. 5 #33 (2008), by Ed Brubaker, the examination went badly for the examiners: the arm woke under Bucky's mental command, attacked the scientists gathered around it, escaped through an air vent, and made its own way across the Helicarrier back to its owner.

Reunited with his weapon, Bucky fought his way out of custody without killing anyone, then went straight at Director Tony Stark — and the confrontation detoured into history, because Stark relayed Steve's last wish that he help Bucky, and offered him the shield instead. Bucky accepted on two conditions: a full mental sweep for any leftover Winter Soldier trigger commands, and a promise that he would report to no one, Stark included.

Why It's Obscure

S.H.I.E.L.D. confiscated the weapon, catalogued the weapon, and then the weapon filed its own escape plan.

THE CAPTURE
Disarmed in every sense. Separating a prisoner from a cybernetic limb sounds like flawless procedure, right up until the limb turns out to have its own chain of command. Somewhere there is a very awkward incident report about this.
THE ARM
Remote loyalty. The detached arm struck on its own, navigated the vents of a flying fortress, and homed back to Bucky's cell — behaviour no ordinary prosthetic on any Stark parts list has ever matched. It is less a spare part than a trained pet made of gunmetal.
THE OFFER
An escape that ended in a promotion. Hours after breaking out, the fugitive was being measured for the most trusted uniform in America, conditions and all. Issue #34 put him in the flag; issue #33 is how he earned the interview.
