Today's Fact

For billions of years the Watchers knew everything and did nothing. The Reckoning War ended with one Watcher knowing everything — and all the rest knowing nothing at all.

The Featured Fact

At the climax of the Reckoning War (2022), Uatu stepped into the Apex of All Reality, the vantage point from which his people had observed every universe, and drew the accumulated memories of every Watcher who had ever lived into himself. He emerged calling himself, without a trace of modesty, the One and Only Watcher — a single mind holding the total recorded experience of his species.

He spent that borrowed godhood on an old debt. The Watchers’ first great sin, the First War against the Prosilicans, had ended with nine-tenths of the universe destroyed and sealed away as the toxic Barrens. Uatu used the Apex’s power to erase the Barrens and restore that lost expanse of creation, renaming it the Borderlands — the largest act of restitution in Marvel history, performed by the species that caused the damage.

The price landed on his own people. With their memories gathered into Uatu, the remaining Watchers were left without their cosmic awareness — no more effortless sight of every world and every tomorrow. The most informed species in existence had to start learning the universe the slow way, one look at a time, while their herald Nick Fury, the Unseen, watched the watchers go blind.

Why It's Obscure

The oath said never interfere. Nobody wrote a rule for what happened in Fantastic Four #45, when interference meant taking the whole species’ sight as payment.

The instrument

The Apex of All Reality — the Watchers’ observation nexus, and the conduit through which Uatu pulled every Watcher memory into one skull.

The old debt

Nine-tenths of everything — the share of the universe destroyed in the First War, restored at last and renamed the Borderlands.

The enemy’s mirror

Destruction — during the same war Galactus, fused with the Destroyer armour, arrived to consume the Watchers’ homeworld of Planet T-37X.

The aftermath

An ordinary species — stripped of omniscience, the surviving Watchers were evacuated and left to rebuild a culture that had defined itself by seeing.
