Today's Fact

The being who must never interfere once interfered for the oldest reason there is — and then had to make a queen hate him for it.

UATU FELL IN LOVE WITH A WARRIOR QUEEN — THEN ACTED LIKE A JERK SO SHE WOULD REJECT HIM!
The Featured Fact

In Tales of Suspense Vol. 1 #56 (1964), Uatu was observing a distant world at war when he saw Queen Kalthea standing on the battlefield to inspire her soldiers. The Watcher — a being who had observed civilisations rise and fall without blinking — fell in love at first sight.

When Kalthea’s forces were overwhelmed and her life was threatened, Uatu broke the Watchers’ sacred oath on the spot. He appeared before the attacking barbarians in his full cosmic enormity, and the sight of him alone routed the army and saved the queen.

Kalthea, grateful and smitten, offered Uatu her hand — to rule her world at her side. He could not accept without abandoning his oath forever, so he did something crueller than refusing: he played the arrogant cosmic god, behaving so coldly and disdainfully that the queen rejected him. Then he went home to the Moon, alone, to watch other people’s lives for eternity.

Why It's Obscure

Uatu has broken his oath for Galactus, for trials, for the fate of worlds. The first time it cost him something personal, it was for a woman whose name almost nobody remembers.

The queen
Kalthea of the Quist — a warrior queen who led from the front lines; her courage, not just her beauty, is what the story says stopped the Watcher mid-observation.
The intervention
No weapon drawn — Uatu saved her by simply being seen; a Watcher’s appearance was the whole cavalry.
The performance
Arrogance as a gift — his contempt was theatre, staged so Kalthea could walk away angry instead of heartbroken.
The silence after
Back to the Moon — no Watcher chronicle followed up on her; Uatu never saw her again, which for an immortal is a very long never.
