Today's Fact
His people's rule was silence. His very first appearance broke it — on panel, in person, in the middle of a fight.
Uatu debuted in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #13 (April 1963), and he did not debut quietly. When the Fantastic Four and Ivan Kragoff — the Red Ghost, backed by his cosmic-ray Super-Apes — carried their Cold War rivalry into the Blue Area of the Moon, the giant figure who had watched humanity unseen for ages stepped out of the dark, froze the Super-Apes in globes of syntho-matter, and announced himself to both sides.
His errand was territorial, not heroic. The Watcher explained that his race observed other worlds under a vow never to interfere, then delivered an edict: Earth's squabble would not be fought in his domain. Rather than settle the contest himself, he removed the battle to the ruined city of the Blue Area and let the two parties fight it out, so that the worthier side would simply demonstrate itself.
Once the Four prevailed, Uatu returned to congratulate them, praised their reach for the stars, and withdrew to a more distant post to avoid further interruption. The template for sixty years of stories was set in a single issue: a being sworn to pure observation who, from his first breath on the page, could not resist stage-managing the outcome just a little.
Why It's Obscure
Later tales count his oath-breaking in the hundreds. The habit was there from page one.
