Every Watcher punishment before this one at least had the decency to end. When the Reckoning — an ancient enemy his own people had armed long ago — returned, Uatu begged the Watchers to act, and instead his father Ikor put him in a chair in the chamber where his kind observe alternate realities and made him watch the single history he had always avoided: the one where he never warned the Fantastic Four about Galactus.
In that timeline, shown in Reckoning War: Trial of the Watcher #1 (2022) by Dan Slott and Javier Rodríguez, the Four still win — at a price. Sue Storm is blinded, Johnny Storm burns his own flesh, Ben Grimm's rocky hide cracks, and part of Reed Richards melts as he builds a weapon that destroys Galactus outright. Worse, the clean energy behind that weapon lifts Earth into a peaceful utopia, and Ikor's sentence is that Uatu view the loop forever, knowing his famous interference had cost the world a paradise.
The cruelty had a second act. In Fantastic Four #43 (2022), the rest of that timeline finally plays out: the utopia's zero energy cannot be contained, Reed loses control of it, and the whole universe is unmade. The paradise Uatu was damned for preventing would have annihilated everything shortly after breakfast — his interference, offered as his greatest shame, turns out to have been the load-bearing wall of reality.
