A WATCHER FOUND GALACTUS BEING BORN — AND LET THE DEVOURER OF WORLDS LIVE!
The Featured Fact

Long before Uatu ever spared Earth, another Watcher held the whole future in his hands at the opposite decision point. Galan of Taa, last survivor of the universe before this one, had merged with that dying cosmos and slept for billions of years inside a cosmic egg assembled from his wrecked ship, slowly becoming Galactus.

Thor #168–169 (1969), by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, named the being who found that egg: Ecce, a Watcher who understood precisely what was hatching in front of him. In the original page reproduced in today's gallery, Ecce admits the power to destroy the newborn force before it could harness itself — and then talks himself out of striking.

His reasoning was the oath itself, that he was pledged never to tamper with the affairs of living beings, and he closed with a prophecy: that he might live for ages yet regret the decision. Galactus departed, devoured Archeopia as his first world, and began the hunger the modern universe still fears. Reference works on Uatu list Ecce among his ancestors, which turns the family trade into a mirror — the ancestor obeyed and spared a monster, while the descendant disobeyed and spared a planet.

Why It's Obscure

Uatu's Galactus story has a first chapter, and in that chapter the Watcher on duty chose the rulebook over the universe.

THE EGG
A birth billions of years long. Galan's gestation inside the cosmic egg outlasted the death of one universe and the ignition of the next. Ecce did not stumble onto a baby; he stumbled onto a loaded era.
1969
His own words convict him. The Thor #169 page has Ecce say the strength to destroy it is his, that fate must decree whether Galactus lives though galaxies die, and that regret may follow him for ages. No later retcon invented his hesitation; Kirby drew it.
THE MIRROR
Same oath, opposite call. When Galactus finally reached Earth, Uatu broke the pledge Ecce had kept and helped the Fantastic Four drive the Devourer off. Between the two Watchers sits every argument about rules ever written.
