Uatu’s most consequential interference began as a planetary hiding job. In Fantastic Four #48 (1966), by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Watcher confesses to the Fantastic Four that he has been concealing Earth behind illusions of atmospheric disaster, trying to keep the planet invisible to the Silver Surfer, herald of Galactus.
When the camouflage fails and the Surfer summons his master anyway, Uatu escalates from concealment to coaching: he warns the team directly, then empowers and guides the Human Torch across Galactus’s vast ship to retrieve the Ultimate Nullifier, a weapon capable of destroying the universe itself.
In Fantastic Four #50 (1966), Reed Richards levels that stolen weapon at Galactus, and the Devourer — horrified at facing his own arsenal — swears to spare Earth and withdraws. Humanity survives its first encounter with Galactus because its assigned observer broke ranks three separate times in a single story: hiding, warning, and arming.
Why It's Obscure
