Uatu's own people once hauled him home and put him on trial for the one crime a Watcher can commit: interfering. The case was heard in Captain Marvel #39 (1975) — literally titled “The Trial of the Watcher” — after Uatu, disgracing himself completely, had physically fought Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) while allied with the Kree renegades of the Lunatic Legion on the Moon.
The defense was extraordinary: Mar-Vell himself — the man Uatu had just attacked — followed the Watchers' teleportation beam to their homeworld and insisted on speaking for him, arguing that every one of Uatu's interferences had been helpful. The Watchers ignored him and locked him in a stasis field; he escaped, survived a jungle predator called a Rackcat with Rick Jones's help, and pleaded again: saving his life had been worth the interference. A young Watcher named Aron watched it all, fascinated.
The verdict? Uatu confessed the real motive — envy. Watching Earth's heroes had made him yearn to be one, even to see himself as the true Protector of the Universe. He promised never to interfere again, the elder Emnu accepted his word, and the trial ended. Rick Jones was left flabbergasted that he got off so easily. He broke the promise, of course. Repeatedly.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody knows Uatu breaks his oath. Almost nobody knows his people once formally tried him for it — and the hero he had just attacked defended him.
