HIS PEOPLE'S FIRST GIFT ENDED A WORLD!
The Featured Fact

Billions of years ago, the Watchers — then called the Luminous — decided it was their duty to share their knowledge with younger races. At the urging of Ikor, a delegation of four brought atomic-energy knowledge to the planet Prosilicus. The Prosilicans accepted the gift — and used it to build nuclear weapons and destroy themselves in an auto-genocidal war. When the Watchers returned, the survivors blamed them for handing a young civilization technology it was not ready for.

Ashamed, the Watchers swore an oath: never again interfere in the affairs of other races. They renamed themselves for the only job they would allow themselves — Watchers — and each took a post on a moon above an inhabited world to observe and record, nothing more. Uatu drew Earth, building his citadel in the Blue Area of the Moon.

The twist that makes it personal: it was Uatu's father Ikor who proposed the Prosilicus gift — and Uatu has spent eons breaking the oath his father's failure created, warning the Fantastic Four about Galactus, the Molecule Man, and Kang, and even standing trial before his own people for interfering. Original Sin #0 (2014) revealed that Uatu's life is directly tied to the event that forced the vow.

Why It's Obscure

Everybody knows the Watcher only watches. Almost nobody knows the oath was written by his own father's catastrophic act of charity — or that Uatu has spent his life breaking it.

Prosilicus
A delegation of four Watchers, at Ikor's urging, brings atomic-energy knowledge to Prosilicus. The Prosilicans build nuclear weapons and fight an auto-genocidal war. The survivors blame the gift — and the givers.
The oath
Ikor drafts a code of strict noninterference and passive observation. The Luminous rename themselves the Watchers and take posts on the moons of inhabited worlds. The Prime Directive, but self-imposed and absolute.
1963
Fantastic Four #13 (Lee & Kirby) — Uatu debuts as Earth's Watcher, in his citadel in the Blue Area of the Moon. He will break the oath repeatedly: Galactus, Molecule Man, Kang — and stand trial for it.
2014
Original Sin #0 — the retcon that ties it together: Uatu's life is directly bound to the Prosilican disaster, because the Watcher who proposed the gift was his father.
