Today's Fact
Checked against independent sources — the issues are cited below.
In Avengers #59–60 (1968–69), a swaggering new vigilante called Yellowjacket broke into Avengers Mansion, announced that he had killed Hank Pym, and kidnapped the Wasp. By every reasonable standard, what Janet van Dyne did next was madness: she came back to her horrified teammates and told them she was going to marry him.
Janet was not fooled, and she was not reckless. Held captive, she had recognised the truth the moment Yellowjacket kissed her — the stranger was Hank himself, his inhibitions burned away by experimental gases he had inhaled in his laboratory, his mind insisting that Goliath had to be replaced by a bolder man who would finally propose.
She checked with a lawyer that a marriage to Hank Pym would stay legal even if he wed her under another name, then walked down the aisle at Avengers Mansion. The Circus of Crime crashed the reception disguised as caterers, and the sight of Janet in danger snapped the groom back to himself: Yellowjacket burst out of his costume as giant-sized Goliath, and the bride got her husband — name, size and all.
Why It's Obscure
Her teammates saw a founding Avenger marrying her boyfriend's supposed killer. Janet had already done the detective work, the legal work and the deciding.
