Today's Fact

Marvel's most durable friendship started with a crashed helicopter, a drained battery, and a stranger in grey plate armour asking for a lift.

RHODEY FIRST MET IRON MAN IN A VIETNAM JUNGLE — STARK HAD JUST ESCAPED CAPTIVITY IN HOMEMADE ARMOR!
The Featured Fact

James Rhodes was not hired out of a boardroom. In the flashback told in Iron Man Vol. 1 #144 (1981), "Apocalypse Then," Lieutenant Rhodes is a Marine helicopter pilot shot down behind enemy lines in Vietnam, working desperately to get his wrecked craft airborne again — when a man in bulky grey armour walks out of the jungle.

The armoured man was Tony Stark, hours removed from building his first Iron Man suit in a prison camp and escaping after the death of fellow captive Professor Yinsen. Attacked together, the two proved themselves to each other the practical way: Stark recharged his armour from the helicopter's batteries, and pilot and inventor fought side by side through the jungle to a hidden enemy rocket base.

They stole an enemy helicopter, destroyed the base, and flew back to American lines together. Before they parted, Stark offered the pilot a job — fly for me when the war ends. Rhodes took other work first, including a stretch as a mercenary, before finally accepting and becoming Stark's personal pilot and chief aviation engineer: the first rung on a ladder that ends at the War Machine armour.

Why It's Obscure

Rhodes debuted as staff in 1979; this 1981 flashback quietly rewired him into the foundation of Iron Man's origin itself.

#118
The quiet debut — Rhodes first appears in Iron Man #118 (1979) as Stark's pilot, a background figure with no past — until the flashback gave him one.
Shot down
The meeting — Rhodes' helicopter is downed by rocket fire; Stark, fresh from his captivity escape, finds him trying to coax the wreck back into the air.
Batteries
First teamwork — Stark drains the helicopter's batteries to recharge his prototype armour, and the pair fight their way to the rocket base that shot Rhodes down.
The offer
A job, eventually — Stark's standing offer survives the war and Rhodes' mercenary detour; accepting it makes him pilot, confidant, and ultimately an armoured hero.
