Today's Fact

During the Skrull Secret Invasion, a virus built by the shapeshifters shut down virtually every piece of Stark technology on Earth, Tony Stark included. One asset kept flying: James Rhodes, whose armour ran on non-Stark systems. In Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. #33–35 (2008), the three-issue War Machine: Weapon of S.H.I.E.L.D. arc, a coded holographic message from Stark sent Rhodes to coordinates in orbit — and to the strangest vehicle he has ever piloted.
Waiting in the dark was a cloaked satellite station Stark had built in secret after the superhero Civil War, deliberately constructed without his own patented Starktech so that no attack on his systems could ever touch it. Former Force Works heroine Suzi Endo, the Cybermancer, was already aboard. When a Skrull fleet followed Rhodes into orbit, Endo revealed the station's real purpose: the entire satellite was a single functional weapon, and Rhodes himself was the key that switched it on.
Linked to its new pilot, the station unfolded and reconfigured into a colossal robotic War Machine, with Rhodes at its heart and its firepower at his command. He used the giant form to tear through the Skrull armada approaching Earth, then took the fight down into Russian airspace to finish an escaping Skrull ship alongside the Winter Guard. Stark's contingency plan had a name, and for one invasion it was the size of a space station.
Why It's Obscure
A suit of armour is personal. Stark quietly built Rhodes a spare that was measured in tonnes, crewed by a station, and hidden from the entire planet.

- Satellite Armor — Marvel DatabaseThe Marvel Database entry for the Satellite Armor records that Stark built the station without Starktech, summoned Rhodes to command it, and that Rhodes transformed it into its giant armour mode and destroyed the approaching Skrull armada.
- Secret Invasion Review: Iron Man / War Machine #33–35 — Bureau 42Bureau 42's review of the Weapon of S.H.I.E.L.D. arc confirms the premise: the last three issues of Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. were rebranded for War Machine, with Rhodes' insulated armour defending the planet in Stark's stead.
