BEFORE HE WAS WAR MACHINE, RHODEY RAN STARK'S WHOLE COMPANY — BECAUSE TONY FAKED HIS OWN DEATH!
The Featured Fact

James Rhodes has held three jobs most men never touch: Iron Man, chief executive, and grieving best friend — and the last two were handed to him by a lie. By 1992 Tony Stark’s body was failing him, wrecked by years of damage, so Stark chose a drastic hiding place: a cryogenic sleep the whole world was told was his death.

Stark’s supposed final wishes, set in motion around Iron Man #284 (1992), named Rhodes as CEO of Stark Enterprises and asked him to carry on as Iron Man in the newest suit Stark had built — the heavy grey arsenal that fans would soon know by the name War Machine. Rhodes mourned his friend, took the corner office, and flew the armour, believing every word of it.

When Rhodes discovered Stark had been alive in suspended animation the entire time, the reunion detonated instead of healing. Feeling used, he resigned the chief executive’s chair and severed the friendship, keeping the grey armour only at Stark’s insistence — and it was in that break, flying solo with the West Coast Avengers, that the suit’s name finally became the man’s own codename.

Why It's Obscure

Plenty of heroes inherit a costume. Rhodes inherited a costume, a corporation, and a funeral that turned out to be theatre.

1992
A will with strings attached. The dying request that promoted Rhodes also scripted his grief, because Stark needed the world — enemies included — to believe the death completely. Even Stark’s farewells came with a cover story.
THE OFFICE
CEO in armour. For a stretch, the most heavily armed man in the Marvel Universe also signed off on a major corporation’s business between missions. Hostile takeovers rarely anticipate the chairman arriving by repulsor.
THE BREAK
Why the name stuck. War Machine began as a description of Stark’s grey prototype, yet Rhodes only claimed it as his identity after walking away from Stark’s shadow for good. The codename is a resignation letter that learned to fly.
