Movie audiences know the yellow gem in the Vision’s forehead as the Mind Stone, the prize Thanos eventually tore out of him. The comics told a quieter story from the very beginning. When the Vision debuted in Avengers Vol. 1 #57 (October 1968), by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, the diamond on his brow was a Solar Jewel — a power plant, not a cosmic artefact.
The jewel works like a leaf engineered by a perfectionist. It absorbs ambient solar energy, even in darkness, and converts that light into the power his synthetic body runs on. Stored sunlight is also his ammunition: the Vision can discharge it as optic beams of infrared and microwave radiation, tuned across an enormous range of heat.
Pushing the jewel itself is his emergency option. In extreme cases he can fire the accumulated energy directly through the Solar Jewel, which amplifies the blast considerably — at the cost of draining most of his reserves in a single shot. The synthezoid who seems tireless is, underneath the engineering, a solar battery with a strict budget, and every forehead blast is spending his own fuel.
Why It's Obscure
Strip away the films and the famous forehead gem turns out to be a solar panel with a weapons setting.
