The Venom symbiote is a grandfather, and it got the title the hard way. In Venom vs. Carnage #1 (2004), by Peter Milligan and Clayton Crain, Carnage — Venom’s own spawn — produces an offspring of his own, making the newborn the 1,000th symbiote in their line and Venom a very unwilling grandparent.
The two elders wanted opposite futures for the child: Carnage tried to kill his spawn before and after its birth, fearing his own genes would come back to bite him, while Venom argued the 1,000th generation risked a severe mental collapse without guidance. The newborn settled the argument by bonding to NYPD officer Patrick Mulligan, who was caught at the scene of Carnage’s rampage.
Venom personally named the newcomer Toxin in Venom vs. Carnage #2 (2004), and the family reunion turned violent at once: Toxin proved stronger than both his father and his grandfather, and — guided by Mulligan’s conscience — chose heroism over the family business, becoming the first symbiote Spider-Man treated as an ally.
Why It's Obscure
