VENOM WAS CONDEMNED TO DEATH BY ITS OWN SPECIES — FOR WANTING TO PROTECT ITS HOST INSTEAD OF USE IT UP!
The Featured Fact

The Venom symbiote was judged insane by its own kind — for being too loyal. According to the “Planet of the Symbiotes” storyline (1995), beginning in Amazing Spider-Man Super Special #1, normal symbiotes of its line possessed hosts, drove them to perform ever more daring feats, drained them of adrenaline until they died, and moved on. The creature that became Venom did something its species considered deranged: it wanted to form a single, strong, permanent symbiotic bond with one host — and protect that host.

For that, it was placed in a prison canister and condemned to death by disintegration, so it could not pollute the species’ gene pool. Later accounts, including the corrupted-Klyntar version retold for Flash Thompson’s Venom, keep the same verdict: among corrupted symbiotes who treated hosts as chattel, wanting a genuine partnership was the madness. The prison ended up on the patchwork world the Beyonder assembled for the Secret Wars — Battleworld.

Which means Spider-Man’s famous black ‘costume’ was a death-row inmate he accidentally set free while looking for a costume-repair machine. Every host since — Peter Parker, Eddie Brock, Flash Thompson — has lived with a symbiote whose defining ‘defect,’ in its own people’s eyes, is the very thing that made its best bonds work: it commits.

Why It's Obscure

Venom’s first death sentence came from its own species — for the crime of wanting to protect its host.

1995
Planet of the Symbiotes — Amazing Spider-Man Super Special #1 and the 1995 Super Specials reveal the prison sentence: deemed insane for wanting commitment over consumption. The diagnosis was loyalty.
998TH
Its generation. The symbiote was the 998th generation of its lineage, hatched on Klyntar and bred to be an Agent of the Cosmos before corruption and exile rewrote its file. A long family tree, and it was the black sheep — literally.
PRISON
The canister. Condemned to disintegration, sealed away so its genes could not spread — its prison later became part of Battleworld’s landscape. Spider-Man opened a death-row cell thinking it was a wardrobe.
THE IRONY
What it wanted is what worked. Its strongest eras — Brock’s Lethal Protector years, Flash’s Agent Venom — run on exactly the mutual bond its species called madness. Turns out the crazy one had the healthy relationship model.
