Today's Fact

America’s most flag-draped enforcer once received the one posting he considered an insult: north, with a maple leaf on the mission patch.

THE U.S. AGENT WAS EXILED TO CANADA — WALKER REFUSED THE OMEGA FLIGHT POSTING UNTIL THE PURPLE MAN FLED NORTH TOO!
The Featured Fact

During the Superhuman Civil War, Tony Stark ordered John Walker to Canada as the American liaison to the newly formed Omega Flight, guarding a border that fleeing American super-criminals suddenly found very attractive. Walker’s answer, recorded in Civil War: Choosing Sides (2006), was that he served Uncle Sam, not “Major Maple Leaf” — and he stormed out under threat of arrest.

Canada needed the help. Most of Alpha Flight had been killed, leaving the country thinly defended while Registration dodgers ran for the border, and Stark argued that Canadian security — and the oil supply that came with it — was an American priority. None of that moved Walker. Patriotism, for him, had a strictly domestic service area.

What moved him was a grudge. The Purple Man mind-controlled a S.H.I.E.L.D. team into attacking Walker, stole his shield, and ordered him off a great height — a fall he survived with most of his bones broken. When Walker learned his tormentor had fled to Canada, he signed on for Omega Flight #1-5 (2007), led the reluctant team against a possessed Wrecking Crew, and eventually took his shield back from the man who had taken it.

Why It's Obscure

An assignment remembered less for the geopolitics than for the tantrum — and for the villain-shaped loophole in Walker’s refusal.

2006
The order — Civil War: Choosing Sides stages the confrontation: Stark issues the Canada posting and Walker rejects it in the room, arrest threat and all.
Omega Flight
The team — Walker served alongside Sasquatch, Talisman, Spider-Woman and a new Guardian, Michael Pointer, whose own history with Alpha Flight’s deaths made the posting heavier.
Purple Man
The loophole — one stolen shield and one ordered fall turned a refused assignment into a personal manhunt with a Canadian return address.
2007
The run — Omega Flight #1-5 (April–August 2007) is the whole arc: the Wrecking Crew, the Great Beasts they freed, and Walker’s uneasy command.
