Today's Fact
The black suit Walker still wears was sewn for a protest: Steve Rogers wore it to keep fighting after he quit being Captain America.
When Steve Rogers refused to work directly for the Commission on Superhuman Activities, he surrendered the shield, the flag costume and the name — and the government handed all three to John Walker. Rogers, however, did not retire. With a black uniform of his own design and a vibranium shield supplied by the Black Panther, he kept operating under the plain title of the Captain, pointedly serving the country while answering to no commission.
The two men eventually fought the Red Skull's plot out between them, Rogers reclaimed the Captain America identity, and Walker — officially dead after a staged public assassination — needed a way back onto the board. The Commission's answer arrived in Captain America Vol. 1 #354 (1989), by Mark Gruenwald and Kieron Dwyer: Walker returned under the new name U.S. Agent, wearing Rogers' discarded black costume, its star and stripes rearranged just enough to mark it as a different office.
So the most recognisable thing about the U.S. Agent is second-hand twice over. Walker inherited Rogers' job, Rogers' shield, and finally Rogers' spare uniform — the outfit its first owner had created specifically to prove Captain America could exist without government permission, now issued to the government's own man.
Why It's Obscure
A uniform with two owners and opposite meanings: rebellion when Rogers wore it, assignment when Walker did.
