Today's Fact

The government could not keep Walker in the field, so it handed him the keys to the building where the field's worst graduates end up.

AFTER NUKE TOOK HIS ARM AND LEG, JOHN WALKER'S NEXT ASSIGNMENT WAS RUNNING A PRISON — HE BECAME WARDEN OF THE RAFT!
The Featured Fact

Retirement came to John Walker wearing a warden's badge. After his service in the Siege of Asgard, Walker was appointed warden of the Raft, the maximum-security prison for superpowered offenders moored off Ryker's Island, with the new posting laid out in Thunderbolts Vol. 1 #144 (2010).

He took the job in a wheelchair, short one arm and one leg. Nuke had severed both during the fighting in Asgard, and Walker refused advanced prosthetics that might have rebuilt him into something closer to the cyborg who maimed him, accepting a simple prosthetic arm instead. The warden's authority, pointedly, did not depend on the missing hardware.

The desk job kept finding the fight anyway. Walker broke up inmate riots in person, hand-picked the candidates for a new Thunderbolts beta team and installed Songbird to lead it, and later had to override a lethal vacuum fail-safe by hand when the Juggernaut smashed the Raft apart during Fear Itself.

Why It's Obscure

Every other chapter of Walker's career is an argument about the shield. This one is an argument about whether the man still counts without it.

#144
The appointment — Thunderbolts Vol. 1 #144 (2010) opens Walker's tenure running the Raft, the prison the Thunderbolts programme drew its recruits from.
The refusal
No upgrades — offered technology that could have restored far more of his body, Walker declined it rather than resemble Nuke, the man who took his limbs.
Beta team
Warden as recruiter — Walker personally selected the Raft inmates for a second Thunderbolts squad and put Songbird in charge of keeping them pointed outward.
Fear Itself
The fail-safe run — when Juggernaut's escape triggered a vacuum trap in one wing, the override could only be reached in person, and the one-legged warden went himself.
