TWO REJECTED SIDEKICKS OUTED JOHN WALKER ON LIVE TV — AND THE WATCHDOGS MURDERED HIS PARENTS FOR IT!
The Featured Fact

Captain America is supposed to be anonymous behind the flag; John Walker's tragedy began the moment he stopped being anonymous. When Walker replaced Steve Rogers as Captain America, the Commission kept only one of his old BUCkie partners, Lemar Hoskins, and rejected Hector Lennox and Jerome Johnson — who took new names, Left-Winger and Right-Winger, and took their revenge at a televised press conference by announcing Walker's real name and hometown to the nation.

Exposure had an address, and the Watchdogs — a violent extremist militia Walker had already fought as Captain America — drove straight to it. They seized Walker's parents, Caleb and Emily, and lured their son into a trap, meaning to kill him in front of them. Walker broke free and fought, but in the melee his parents were gunned down before his eyes.

What followed finished the job of breaking the replacement Captain America. Walker slaughtered the Watchdogs in a rage, then hunted down Left-Winger and Right-Winger and left them to die in an explosion they barely survived. The Commission later ordered him kept from even attending his parents' funeral, and his collapse deepened until, after Rogers reclaimed the shield, Walker had to be hypnotised into believing his parents were still alive.

Why It's Obscure

A secret identity is not vanity. For the man who replaced Captain America, it was the only wall around his family.

THE LEAK
A grudge with a microphone — Lennox and Johnson, cut from Walker's new life, repaid the rejection by broadcasting his name and birthplace.
THE TRAP
Hostages as bait — the Watchdogs took Caleb and Emily Walker to draw out a son they intended to kill in front of them.
THE COST
A funeral he was barred from — Commission orders kept Walker on duty instead of at his parents' burial, one more order in a life run by them.
THE AFTERMATH
Mercy by hypnosis — the state that exposed him eventually had to edit his memory, convincing him the parents he watched die were alive.
