BEFORE THE SHIELD, JOHN WALKER BOUGHT HIS SUPER-STRENGTH FROM THE POWER BROKER — AND DEBUTED AS THE SUPER-PATRIOT!
The Featured Fact

Steve Rogers was handed his strength by the United States government. John Walker paid a corporation for his. In Captain America #323 (November 1986), by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Neary, Walker debuts as the Super-Patriot — a flag-waving publicity hound who stages rallies attacking Captain America's patriotism — but the strength underneath the showmanship came from Power Broker, Inc., Curtiss Jackson's firm, which sold superhuman augmentation to anyone who could pay.

Walker did not buy alone. An agent of the Power Broker recruited four recently discharged soldiers together — Walker, Lemar Hoskins, Hector Lennox and Jerome Johnson — and all four were successfully strength-augmented. To cover the cost of the treatments, the men were pointed toward the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation before talent scout Ethan Thurm repackaged them: Walker as the Super-Patriot, his three partners as his hype squad, the Bold Urban Commandos — the BUCkies.

The corporate origin carried corporate fine print. Power Broker's process left many augmentees hooked on an addictive drug only the company supplied, on the story that without it they would die — a leash disguised as aftercare. Walker escaped the worst of that particular trap, but every chapter of his later life — Super-Patriot, Captain America, U.S. Agent — starts in a sales office, not a laboratory of patriotic science.

Why It's Obscure

Rogers got a flag and a serum. Walker got an invoice, a wrestling tryout, and a hype squad named as a punchline.

1986
Captain America #323 — Gruenwald and Neary introduce John Walker as the Super-Patriot, already enhanced, already campaigning against Rogers for the title of America's symbol.
THE DEAL
Four soldiers, one package — Walker, Hoskins, Lennox and Johnson are recruited together and all emerge strength-augmented by Power Broker, Inc.
THE FINE PRINT
Addiction as a contract clause — many Power Broker clients were kept dependent on a company-only drug they were told they needed to survive.
